Can I get rid of dandruff with anti-dandruff shampoos?

Dandruff is a dry, flaky, irritated scalp condition which is caused by the over growth of yeast called melassezia. This type of fungus lives on the surface of the skin in many but in some, it buries in the hair and lives there. The body reacts to it by causing excessive production of cells. The dead cells from the surface of the scalp shed every day.

It can be an embarrassing condition as it can show on the dresses you wear when it’s actively shedding. Dandruff can be fine, powdery or flakes of dead cells. But first it needs to be identified and diagnosed from other similar dry, scaly scalp conditions such as psoriasis, fungal infection, etc.

There are a host of medicated anti-dandruff shampoos in the market. Mostly, these anti-dandruff shampoos contain sulfur or zinc compounds which inhibit certain enzymes of the yeast melassezia so that it is unable to grow. When dandruff is mild, it can be treated with OTC medicated shampoos such as:

    Selsun
    Nizoral
    T-Gel
    Head & Shoulders
    Sebowash

Other scalp medications like Noskurf Lotion also work similarly. They need to be applied to the scalp, left for few hours and then washed off with a shampoo.

How often to use these shampoos?

Anti-dandruff shampoos need to be used regularly, every other day to start with if the condition is severe, and then dropping to twice weekly for 4 weeks or so and then once weekly for maintenance.

When using an anti-dandruff shampoo, leave the lather on for a few minutes for the medicine to act on the scalp before rinsing it off.

Anti-dandruff shampoos can be drying for the hair so you can follow up with a good conditioner to replenish the gloss and shine in your hair.

How can I manage long hair during the monsoons?

Monsoons and non-manageable hair have a long, never-ending relationship. The joy of going out to feel those tiny drops clashes with having healthy hair. Wash hair as often as required but choose your shampoo wisely. Renee Malik, a haircare expert suggests opting for a mild cleansing shampoo for regular use which should be paired with a suitable conditioner depending on your hair type.

Here are a few haircare tips that would come handy during monsoons:

1. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to a mug of water and use as a last rinse after shampoo. It helps relieve itchiness.

2. Experts say that oiling your hair is usually good nourishment but one needs to take care about how long you keep it on. Since the scalp is already oily during the monsoons, oiling your hair just two hours before washing is sufficient.

3. Heat olive oil or sesame seed oil and apply on the scalp with cotton ball and massage gently.

We hope these tips definitely work for your hair and let’s you enjoy the season.

Home-made henna packs for healthy hair

Henna is not only ideal as a natural hair colouring agent but is also a great herbal remedy that comes in handy for common hair problems. It is a soothing way to deep-condition the hair and strengthen it. Its regular usage ensures lustrous and healthy hair texture.

Benefits for hair

Conditions and protects

Henna helps condition and protect hair shaft from harmful exposure and damage. It keeps the keratin content of the hair intact and maintains a balance between the oil and moisture required.  Henna has astringent, antibacterial and antifungal properties that cleanse and protect the scalp well.

Hides grey hair

Henna is an easy and natural way to hide your grey hair. It contains tannic acid, and gallic acid that make it useful for dying the hair. It is free from chemicals that absorb all the moisture from your scalp.  Hence, colouring your hair with henna does not leave your hair dry and damaged and in fact looks healthier and well-moisturised.

Clears dandruff

Due to the antifungal and antibacterial properties present in henna, it relieves the scalp of dryness and itchiness. It restores the lost moisture and thus resolves dandruff issues.

Henna hair packs

Henna and methi

If you are annoyed with all the dandruff falling onto your shirts and find your scalp extremely dry, then the henna and methi hair pack is ideal to help control this problem. For this, soak one tablespoon of methi  overnight in water and then grind it into a paste. Take some mustard oil and heat it with a few leaves of henna in it. Once the oil has cooled down, strain it in case of coarse particles. Add methi paste to the oil and massage it on your scalp. Leave it for at least half an hour before washing your hair. Do this once a week for good results.

Henna and lemon juice with mustard oil

With our hectic schedules and increasing stress levels, hair fall is on the rise too. To tackle this hair problem with natural ingredients, henna and mustard oil would definitely prove beneficial. For this type of pack, take some mustard oil and mix with henna leaves and add one teaspoon of lemon juice or fresh yoghurt to it. Massage this thoroughly on your scalp and leave it for 30 minutes and rinse well.

Henna and black or green tea

Your hair surely deserves a deep-conditioning treatment for damage control and some nourishment. For this, just soak henna powder overnight in freshly brewed black or green tea. You could apply some essential oil or a beaten egg on your hair, before you apply the other part of the mixture. Once you apply the henna mix, leave it for at least an hour before you wash it off. This helps add volume to your locks, improve the texture and add shine to them.

Henna and yoghurt

Henna also works wonders with yoghurt for renewal of hair. You could make a hair pack for this with, 1 cup of dry powder of henna leaves mixed with half a cup of curd. Apply this to the hair and leave it to dry, and wash with cool water, using a very mild shampoo. If you desire beautiful hair, try these other home-made packs henna hair packs.

Henna and mustard oil

For a head massage that benefits your routine haircare regime, a massage with henna and mustard oil work very well. Take some mustard oil and add dried henna leaves to it. Boil this mixture until you see the leaves burning and strain the oil using a muslin cloth. Cool and store the oil in an airtight container.

Henna and amla

To hide your grey hair in a healthy way, henna is the ideal choice. You could begin with boiling water and add two tablespoons of dried amla and one teaspoon of black tea and two cloves. Strain this water and add henna for a thick paste. Leave overnight or for at least two hours and apply on hair.

Brittle hair – causes, treatment and home remedies

Does your hair break easily and looks dull, frizzy and dry? You probably have brittle hair which if ignored can lead to hair loss eventually. But there are tips and tricks which can help you manage this condition yourself. We asked renowned hair and skin expert Dr Jaishree Sharad to tell us more about brittle hair – its causes and ways to manage it.

Why does hair become brittle?

Your hair can turn brittle without you even realising it. Even people who have luscious locks can have brittle hair if they do not take good care of it. According to Dr Sharad, ‘Brittle hair is generally caused by various chemical and physical treatments done to the hair fibre such as excessive curling, dying, or the improper use of other hair straightening products, excessive sun exposure. Because so many environmental and cosmetic factors may be at once, it is difficult to pinpoint one factor as THE CAUSE of hair weathering.’

Tips to reverse this condition

A few dietary changes and DIY tips can help you tackle brittle hair with ease. Lack of certain essential vitamins such as vitamin C, B complex, iron too can result in weak and brittle hair. Since the hair is made of keratin which is a protein, it is vital to feed your hair that to increase its strength. Here’s what Dr Sharad advises:

Eat a high-protein diet comprising chicken, eggs, fish, sprouts, soya, paneer, milk, yoghurt to make hair stronger from within.
Use mild hair shampoos to wash your hair.
Avoid blow drying and other heat treatments such as perming or straightening.
Avoid sun exposure or cover hair with a hat or apply hair sunscreen to protect it from harmful rays.
Check your hemoglobin level and if low, take supplements.

DIY hair packs for brittle hair

A simple hair pack which you can make at home is of aloe vera gel and honey. Mix the two in equal proportions and then apply the mixture on your roots and hair and let it stay for 15 minutes. Then rinse hair with plain water or a mild shampoo. Do this twice a week to see results. The gel will make your hair less frizzy and honey will provide the moisture it needs.

Another hair mask which you can make at home is using the yolk of an egg and adding a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with it. Apply it the same way and leave for 15-20 minutes before washing it off. This will not just strengthen your roots but add a shine too.

Pamper your tresses with a hair spa at home

Want to pamper your hair without spending too much money? Why not opt for a hair spa at home? Here’s how to do it. First, warm some oil — pick one best-suited for your hair such as coconut, olive, sweet almond, etc. Now apply it on your scalp and tips using a cotton ball. You can give yourself a head massage or champi to boost blood circulation. Next, fill a bucket with hot water and then dip a towel in it. Quickly wrap this towel on your head. You can repeat this step multiple times for added benefit. If you have a steamer, you can skip the towel and take steam directly on your hair.

After this, apply a hair pack. Depending on your hair type, you can make a pack accordingly. Eggs are generally good for all hair types, even curd is quite nourishing. Leave this pack on for 20-30 minutes. You can cover your head with a shower cap. After this, you can wash your hair with a mild shampoo and then condition it. Let it air dry instead of using a blow-dryer. Repeat the process twice a month to pamper your hair and keep them looking gorgeous.

You hair needs sunscreen too!

The blazing summer heat can take a toll on our beauty. While we all know the importance of applying sunscreen on our skin to protect it from harmful rays, what about our hair? It needs protection too. While sunscreen for hair is quite a new concept, it is catching up and even experts recommend using it. Dr Kiran Lohia, MD says hair sunscreen is extremely useful. ‘Essentially, UVA and UVB rays from the sun damage the cuticle of the hair resulting in dryness, brittleness and damaged hair. You can notice that the top layer of the hair is much frizzier and thinner than the layers that are not exposed to the sun,’ she says.

Damaged hair can break easily and constant breakage can lead to loss of hair. Also, hair becomes unmanageable and unruly. These harmful rays can affect the protein of our hair known as keratin which is responsible for making our hair stronger. Although, unlike its effects on our skin, it may not lead to cancer, the rays are still damaging to our hair’s overall appearance.

If you have coloured hair, it is all the more important that you protect your locks from the heat as it will fade out faster and even lead to sweat and problems like itching and dandruff on the scalp. Since in India, most people have dark hair, it is still less affected by the harmful UV rays but prolonged exposure can lead to colour changes.

Hair care tips for the summer

Summer can play havoc with your hair. But you can still maintain your gorgeous locks and even get a conditioning boost from the sun with these easy summer hair care tips.

Use moisturising products

Fried hair isn’t just a figure of speech, it’s a reality! The heat of the sun and the exposure to salt, chlorine and sand will open up the hair’s cuticle, stripping it of natural oils and leaving behind scorched strands. Use shampoos, conditioners and styling products that contain the words ‘moisturising’ or ‘hydrating’ on their labels.

Shield your hair colour

‘There’s no such thing as lightening your hair in the sun in a way that’s good for it,’ says hairdresser Jon Patrick. UV rays pull the warmth from colour-treated hair, leaving behind locks that are faded and brassy. Even untreated hair can turn dull under the sun’s oxidising rays.

If you’re outdoors between 10 am and 3 pm, apply a hair care product that contains UV filters, which come in spray, gel or cream formulas, on a daily basis. The best way to protect your hair is by donning a wide-brimmed hat and sitting under a beach umbrella.

Saturate hair before taking a dip

Drench your hair with clean water before you dive into the pool go surfing. ‘Your hair is like a sponge,’ says hairstylist Melissa Herst. ‘If you coat it with clear water, it will soak that in instead of absorbing damaging chlorine or salt.’

Put down the heat tools

With all the heat exposure you’re getting from the sun, you want to keep your use of hot styling tools to a minimum. ‘Blow-drying and flat ironing your hair usually does not hold up well in the heat and humidity, so it’s better to use a styling cream or mousse and let your hair dry naturally,’ says hairstylist Dana Lulgjuraj. For that sexy beachy look, apply a curl-enhancing spray or cream throughout your hair, allow to air-dry (or speed up the process with a blow-dryer set to medium and a diffuser) to keep your hair soft and shiny.

‘Instead of a curling iron, add body or curl to your hair by using rollers on damp hair’, says stylist David Kastin. Let them air-dry, then remove.

And remember, accessories can more than make up for less-than-polished tresses. ‘Get some cool pins and clips and just put your hair up,’ says Kastin. ‘This also minimises the amount of hair exposed to the sun.’

Use tea tree oil to treat ingrown hair

Ingrown hair which look like small, red boils on the skin often bother women after a hair removal session. If left untreated, they turn black and leave a bump on the skin. They are basically hair which is growing inside the skin with its tip visible outside. They can leave the skin feeling irritated and red. Many a times, they occur when hair removal methods aren’t done correctly such as reverse shaving on an area or not pulling out the hair properly during a waxing session. But a simple home remedy can help you fix this problem easily.

Tea tree oil is quite effective in getting rid of ingrown hair. All you have to do is apply a few drops of the oil on the ingrowth once you clean the area properly. Next, exfoliate it gently to make it smooth. You can use a loofah for the same. Tea tree oil has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which will reduce ingrowths so you can apply it after shaving or waxing your hands and legs.

Use amla hair pack to get rid of dandruff

Have pesky dandruff which refuses to leave your side? Why not give home remedies a try? The good thing is that since they are natural, they do not have side-effects and are free from chemicals too. An effective remedy to get rid of dandruff is amla or the Indian gooseberry. Found in abundance in India, you can easily find the fruit in the market or at least its powder or juice.

To make an anti-dandruff pack, take a little amla powder and mix it in water. Apply this on your scalp and leave for a few minutes before washing it off with water. To make the paste more effective, you can combine 10 ground basil leaves (tulsi) to the paste. This will further enhance its fighting action against dandruff. With regular use, you will see that your dandruff has reduced significantly. Not just that, amla is also good for adding a lustrous shine to one’s hair. After washing your hair, take the last rinse of amla water and leave hair to dry.

Use a sugar scrub for soft feet

A scrub helps exfoliate the skin i.e. remove the layer of dead skin cells which get accumulated over time. It is essential to get rid of them in order for the skin to breathe and renew itself. Feet are often ignored as they are so down below but they suffer the maximum damage. If you do not want to go for a pedicure, you can manage to keep your feet soft and beautiful by making this foot scrub at home. Here’s how.

Take one tablespoon of raw sugar and add some olive oil in it. Make sure the scrub is thick enough for application. Now rub it on your feet — the soles, toes, front of the feet — in a circular motion to gently exfoliate the skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes. You can also wet a hand towel in warm water and wrap it around your feet for sealing in the moisture. Then wash your feet with water and pat dry. Apply a body lotion if required and wear socks for better results

Use methi or fenugreek seeds to get rid of an itchy scalp

Have an itchy scalp or small bumps on it? This can be a sign of some scalp infection and can happen due to several reasons such as a dirty or sweaty scalp. But methi or fenugreek seeds can help take the itch out of your scalp. Here’s how to use it.

Take a handful of seeds and soak them overnight. Strain the water in the morning and then rinse your scalp and hair with this solution.  If you want an even more effective solution, then add herbal ingredients to it. Grind a few basil (tulsi) leaves and mix it with a little sesame oil (til ka tel). Now heat this mixture on a low flame and in the end add methi seeds. Let them crackle a little and then switch off the gas. Let it cool down to a temperature where it doesn’t feel too hot to touch and then strain the liquid. Use this for your scalp. Let it stay for 30 minutes and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Use this regularly till the itchiness and bumps disappear.

Manage split ends with simple DIY tips

Split ends are hair which split into two at the ends. These are not just a sign of unhealthy hair but look bad too. If you frequently have split ends, here are a few tips you can make use of.

Firstly, keep your hair well-trimmed. Every three months, go for a haircut. You don’t have to chop off inches, just get the edges trimmed so that split ends are kept at bay. Next, make it a habit to comb your hair. Messy hair can entangle and break and also lead to frequent split ends. If you are someone who uses hairstyling tools and products too often, you may want to reduce the frequency. Putting too much stress on your tresses will make it weak and also dry which will lead to split ends.

Lastly, hair basics such as oiling your hair once a week, pampering it with a hair spa once in a while and using a mild shampoo followed by a conditioner can go a long way in keeping split ends away.

Grow your hair faster with this home remedy!

Accelerating hair growth using home remedies sounds too good to be true? Well you are in for a treat as it is indeed possible! Castor oil can help you initiate hair growth at a faster rate by massaging it into your scalp and roots. As if that wasn’t good enough, it also prevents thinning of hair and makes them less likely to break.

The presence of triglycerides of ricinoleic acid are primarily responsible for the spurt in hair growth. They also have anti-fungal properties and vitamin E which is rich in antioxidants. Every week, apply the oil from root to tip and let it stay for an hour or two before washing it off with water. Many people find castor oil to be too greasy which does not come off easily from hair. To counter this problem, mix a bit of coconut or olive oil with it to make it less sticky. With regular use, you are sure to find a difference. Try this papaya face pack on dry skin

Dry skin often feels itchy and rough because it lacks moisture. This is one reason why people who have dry skin can see lines and wrinkles more visibly on their face. In order to get back its suppleness and also to boost collagen production, make a natural face pack using papaya. It has vitamin A and C which help in nourishing your skin.

You can even opt for slightly overripe papaya chunks. Take 3-4 pieces and then mash them well to make a puree. Now add a few drops of honey and a teaspoon of raw milk in it. Mix them well. Now apply this rich pack on your face and neck. Let it stay for at least 15 minutes and then wash with water. It will nourish your skin and leave it feeling soft and supple. To lock in the moisture, apply a moisturiser with SPF in it.

Use tamarind pulp to get glowing skin

Dull skin is such a mood dampener when it comes to skincare. Even if your skin is clear, unless it is glowing and radiant, it makes you look tired and older than your age. Due to pollution, stress and bad lifestyle habits such as less sleep, smoking, drinking, and sitting in an air-conditioned environment for long hours, the skin loses its sheen and starts to look dull.

If you too have this problem, you can find the solution to it right in your kitchen cabinet. The pulp of tamarind is useful in bringing back your skin’s lost glow. All you have to do is soak it in water for some time and mash it if required to get a gooey, paste-like consistency. Next, apply this on your face carefully avoiding the area around the eyes. Let it stay for a few minutes and then wash your face with water. Tamarind’s pulp has antioxidants and vitamin B and C which will remove dead skin cells and other impurities in your skin and leave it feeling soft and glowing.

Use toothpaste to banish pimples overnight

How often have you experienced this situation — a day before an important event, a pimple pops up on your face. Chances are, quite a few times. We don’t know how this happens but we can give you a quick remedy for it. Simply, use your toothpaste. Take a pea-sized amount on your palm and then gently apply it on the pimple. Let it stay overnight and then the next morning wash your face with your regular face wash. You will notice that by morning, the pimple would have dried and either disappeared or become smaller in size. The toothpaste kills the bacteria in it, dries out the pus and prevents further infection.

Though this is a quick-fix, it is not a long-term solution to get rid of pimples. It is a good remedy for getting rid of 1-2 pimples which pop up out of nowhere on your skin but if you are constantly battling acne, see a skin specialist.
